Crystal Beans From Dungeon Explorer

The best Gauntlet clone

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Hudson Soft

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Sequel of Dungeon Explorer, which I liked. Enemies pour out of generators just like in Gauntlet or Soul Blazer. Gameplay is extremely simple, but enjoyable. Just aim at the generators and shoot em dead. Eight playable characters gives the appearance of variety but they all play exactly the same so it's purely cosmetic. But still appreciated! It's a fun but hollow experience. One of the easiest games in the genre. It constantly gives you items which restore health and give you screen clearing attacks.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

I like the hub and spoke level design, where you play through a short dungeon, beat the boss, and then fast travel to the next area or any previous area, including the home base castle. The dungeons are very short and follow a linear path. There are no puzzles or backtracking - just plow through to the end.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Not much of a storyline other than "go questing for the king". Standard stuff. However, the town has a bunch of NPCs to talk to and the large number of playable characters gives this game some personality.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The environments aren't much to look at but I love the sprites! They remind me of Lagoon, in a good way. I really like the look of this world.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The soundtrack reminds me of Wizards & Warriors, which has one of my favorite OSTs. It's not groundbreaking but I enjoyed every track.

Overall Score: 70
