Dharma Doujou

It's hammer time

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Den'Z

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Very unique. Almost, but not quite amazing. You knock a row of blocks to the left sending one piece down into a discard pile. The goal is to discard all pieces of the same color but this requires some planning. I was hooked but the difficulty ramps up quickly so I eventually lost interest. The controls are a tad too wonky with it eating some of your inputs as you move up and down the rows. This makes it hard to move auickly. The rows are different lengths which seems to change how long it takes to move between them, further throwing off your timing. One mistake will ruin your entire game.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The story mode has an overworld showing you move from town to town. Other modes include a Puzzle where you have to create an exact pattern, a non-timed mode where you have to remove all pieces in a certain order, and a 2-player mode. There's also a very brief tutorial that doesn't give any helpful strategies. The Puzzle is impossible, the Story is fun but stressful, and the Non-timed mode is chill. Great collection of modes if you ask me. I only wish it had an endless mode.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The story mode has cutscenes and a lot of dialogue. The two playable characters look like Pocky from Pocky & Rocky, and Kirin from Dragon Ball. It's charming and oddly kept me wanting to continue playing. The story seems to be a couple of hammer wielding warriors traveling from town to town defeating a monster in each town.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Very cute artwork with lots of animated sprites. The board fills the entire screen and looks nice. Each level has a unique background. The start and end screens have a nice arcade look like something out of Bust a Move.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Pleasant Japanese music that ramps up the tempo when you run low on time. Not my jam, but decent. Nice sound effects.

Overall Score: 68
