Dynamic Stadium

Baseball Stars is on the SNES?!

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Sammy Corporation

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

How did I not know that a Baseball Stars sequel made it to the SNES? What a surprise! This is everything you'd expect from the franchise, including spot-on controls in all aspects of the game. Pitching, hitting, and fielding all feel fantastic. The transition from pitching to fielding is noteworthy, as you can see and move your infielders as the ball begins to travel. There is a significant amount of slowdown during this transition, although it's so helpful that I wonder if it wasn't intentional. It's also worth mentioning that there's precious little time wasted. the time between pitches and the speed in the field are perfect. I love a baseball game that respects my time. I don't know if 16-bit baseball can play any better than this.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Has all the modes you could ask for. Exhibition, Season, All Star Game, and Tournament modes are all here.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

I hope you like the Japanese leagues, and the 1992 season specifically. Unfortuantely, that's two years before Ichiro became a mainstay on the Orix BlueWave roster. The important menus are all in English, so there's no real language barrier, but the weak power numbers in the Japanes leagues means you won't see many home runs.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely artwork. It's a far cry from the Neo Geo entries in this series, but what did you expect? the character models look a bit like the Ken Griffey games, and the animations and little cutscenes are excellent.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

My only real complaint about this game is the lousy music which cannot be turned off.
