Feda: The Emblem of Justice

Shining Force with furries

Genre: strategy - turn-based tactics

Publisher: Yanoman

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Simple turn-based gameplay similar to Shining Force. In fact, I would call this a clone. You and your opponent take turns moving one character at a time. This results in a lot of damage taken by your characters. At this point everything is pretty standard stuff with some characters having arranged attack, most having melee attacks and weak characters providing health and long-range magic attacks. The biggest complaint I've got about the gameplay is that you can't get a preview for the movement that your opponents can make. I know this is a more modern quality of life feature, but it's sorely missed here.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

I played for a couple of hours and the battles were still incredibly easy. I'm not sure if this trend continues indefinitely but I was never at risk of losing even a single character from my party. Most of the fights had a winning condition of destroying the entire opposing army, while others required you only to last a certain amount of time. However, due to the low difficulty, I destroyed the opponent too quickly to know what happens if you run out of time, or if that's even possible. Level design is limited by structure of allowing you to only move one character at a time, so you can't create bottlenecks or lure in a bunch of enemies on a single turn. So most of the level design is simply a different map. It's not very complicated.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

This game goes deep into its story. At least they spend a lot of time forcing you to read all of the dialogue between characters. This one has two warring groups with you and your party members as deserters from the evil empire. It has a Star Wars or Final Fantasy VI feel to it. One unique aspect of the world is the presence of a bunch of furries. Many characters and human, but most of your party is made up of anthropomorphic wolves, foxes and such, and enemies include slimes, minotaurs, and orcs.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

So this is a mixed bag, overworld and turn-based areas include really small sprites that aren't very well drawn. However, in battle, the sprites look fantastic. Again, the straws comparisons The Shining Force games which also have simple overworlds with detailed Battle graphics.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is decidedly disappointing. It's just kind of a steady drone without any interesting elements. I wound up muting it and listening to other music. Just so unimpressive but not bad.
