From TV Animation Slam Dunk: Yonkyo Taiketsu!!

Turn-based basketball

Genre: sports - basketball

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Novel, but also awful. It's basically a turn-based basketball game. You have a little bit of direct control of your player, but it's incredibly slow paced. I can't emphasize this enough - your movement makes sloths look speed demons. Your teammates barely move, so you just have to meander up the court until an opponent stops you for one of the aforementioned turns. You're given the ability to move left of right and have four choices that map to the four face buttons although the buttons only randomly do anything. Oh and the position of these buttons change from turn to turn. It's bizarre. Taking a shot amounts to a QTE whose timing I cannot figure out. So, I never make a shot while the opponent always does. For joy.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Two modes - story and exhibition. I didn't even bother with the story as there is way too much Japanese text.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's a manga/anime, so it's story rich. Getting into an exhibition match requires way too many button presses.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The turn-based animations and artwork are pretty awesome, but this is completely outweighed by the tiny play area while you're actually playing the game. Horrible sprites tha took like SD Ken dolls.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I enjoyed the song that plays during gameplay. It's forgettable but exciting. Barely any sound effects.

Overall Score: 32
