Front Mission Series: Gun Hazard for SFC

Front Mission Series: Gun Hazard

A Pixar movie pitch: what if Mechs had feelings

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: Square

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Mech games are always a crapshoot because of the slow, deliberate movement and combat. This has all of those warts, but it comes together well despite the limitations. I had a good time anyway, and I want to keep playing. It's an incredibly easy game, which probably helps a lot. There's lite RPG elements and deep customization options. I usually don't care for such things but I did in this game because the menuing wasn't cumbersome.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The game is designed with a linear mission-to-mission structure that gives an air of freedom but a complete lack of it. And the stages themselves couldn't be more simplistic. Just go to the right, engage in some light platforming, shoot a few bad guys, farm experience by respawning enemies off screen, and then get to the far right to end the level. Every stage is the same. Cybernator and Metal Warriors had far better level design.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

The story is the star of this title. You spend more time reading text than playing but it's a cool near-future militaristic storyline.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

This is probably being generous, as this game is a step below Cybernator and Metal Warriors. The mechs are kind of boring. Your mech looks like the loader that Ripley operates in Aliens. But the animation is great. Definitely above average, but not amazing.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Easily this games best quality. The soundtrack is classic Square quality, albeit with a couple of tracks I don't care for, especially the shop song.
