Galaxy Wars for SFC

Galaxy Wars

Party like it's 1979

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Imagineer

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Looks, sounds, and plays like a 1979 arcade because, you guessed it, that's what this game is. The gameplay is a mashup of Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Frogger, where you press the button to accelerate your ship up the screen, avoiding rows of asteroids moving laterally to the top of the screen in hopes of hitting two rows alien ships. Honestly it's a fun challenge for a few minutes but the utter lack of variety will make you lose interest quickly.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

What level design? There's exactly one stage repeated endlessly. The same number of enemies moving at the same speed in the same patterns. The projectiles fired by enemies do increase in speed after a couple of levels but that's the extent of the variety to be found.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

As you'd expect there's not much presentation here. Just you and some alien ships.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

There are three visual modes: black & white, color, and neo, which is an upgraded style along to an early 8-bit title. The original modes look like an Atari 2600 game while the neo mode features simple, shaded sprites with a couple of frames of animation plus exactly one background.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Only the neo mode has music but you can't hear it over the mind numbing and abrasive sound of your rocket engine. Mute please

Overall Score: 41
