G-O-D: Mezame yoto Yobu Koe ga Kikoe

The other modern-day RPG starring a backwards hat wearing boy with a bat and an overbearing Mother

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: Imagineer

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Standard turn based RPG. Not much to say, to be honest. It's got a decent inventory system, thank goodness, so that's one improvement over the game it's cloned from. The difficulty is extreme right from the start but you level up quickly so I don't think it's a long term issue. Other QoL features are optimal equip, fast movement, and holding A to effectively auto-battle.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The world feels small and cramped. All areas are straightforward and narrow corridors. There's no sense of adventure. It's not bad, just extremely linear.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

BLATANT Earthbound ripoff. They could not have been more overt about the inspiration behind this game. That said, it's missing the heart that EB has in spades. There's plenty of meta humor and NPC dialogue which feels so forced. If only we could marry up this game's QoL features with everything else about EB.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

I think the graphics are best described as a cross between Dragon's Quest and Earthbound, but with the most blase character designs known to man. The backgrounds are quite nice (ala DQ) and the enemies are rats and bats and leeches (ala EB) but again, are terribly uninteresting to look at. They animate well, anyway.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Pretty meh music. Some of it is enjoyable but nothing impresses.

Overall Score: 71
