Gegege no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma Daiou

Japanese Cuphead

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Stilted movement. Very short jump. Main weapon, I kid you not, is shooting dandruff from your head. This has limited reach (maybe 1/4 of the screen) and you're immobile while shooting so it's very easy to take damage while attacking. You have to be very careful how you engage enemies. Enemies drop ammo for three other power-ups which are almost completely useless.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Very strange. Each level is only 4-5 screens wide and includes only a handful of enemies which must be killed to bring out the boss. There are no health drops but your health is restored between levels. Enemies hit hard, are damage sponges, and are difficult to avoid so it's almost like a boss rush on every level. You've got unlimited continues so try, try again. It's almost like a precursor to Cuphead.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Very strange anime crossed with traditional Japanese demon folklore. You're a lanky kid with Shaggy's hair and a bad case of dandruff. Enemies are all kinds of weird Japanese concoctions.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Some sprites look good but they have very little animation. Some sprites have shading and details while others have sharp lines. The artwork appears to have been cobbled together from 2 or 3 different games. The backgrounds are excellent and include some nice effects and depth. Overall it's just a weird looking game.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

I enjoyed the music but man oh man are the sound effects terrible. They're caustic and way too loud. Mute this game.

Overall Score: 38
