Gourmet Sentai Barayarō

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Virgin

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Limited moves. Only a punch, a grab and throw, and a jump kick. Enemies take a lot of hits but not too many. Extremely fast movement gives the game a satisfying pace. Generous hit detection. Good stuff. In one player mode you often get a clone who fights with you. This is most welcome, although friendly fire is on which means you have to keep your distance. Enemies drop health but your health meter carries with you between levels which makes the game harder than it should be.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Standard fare level design. But good. A step behind the best in the genre, but not far behind. Fun and interesting looking locales do most of the work here.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Well and truly bizarre. I have no idea what's going on here but I love it. The setting is far future sci-fi, with mutants and robot human hybrids and tiny men who control robots.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Incredible stuff. Huge sprites with arcade quality animation and effects. How is this a SNES game? Incredibly detailed backgrounds with animation and great depth. Spectacular all around. Bizarre character designs. I kept wondering what would pop up next.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Frenetic music. Each level has a different track. The sounds are good but get old because of the repetition. Still, overall the sounds is excellent

Overall Score: 78
