Jungle no Ouja Tar-chan: Sekai Man'yuu Dai Kakutou no Maki

Cho Aniki meets Prince of Persia

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Frustrating movement, reminiscent of Prince of Persia or Flashback. You've got a punch and a jump kick as offensive weapons plus a powerful punch to remove breakable barriers. Enemies mostly stand in place in the third level. There are guys who throw hadoukens which can't be avoided. There's a ton of platforming, way more than combat, and it's quite frustrating given the stiff slow controls. The only really good gameplay mechanic is Metroid Fusion-esque ledge grabbing.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are very long and take you up and down vertical sections of platforming. The third level becomes very labyrinthine with difficult jumps and tiny platforms that don't work well with the controls. Each level ends with a boss fight and then there's a Rock-Paper-Scissors mini game between levels.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

You're Tarzan and enemies range from machine gun wielding soldiers to hadouken throwing karate monks. I'm not sure what I'm trying to accomplish or what the story is. Despite the game looking rather serious and the enemies being deadly serious, there are elements of humor scattered throughout. Your sprite for one thing is an overt bodybuilder straight out of the Cho Cho Aniki series who flexes anytime you're idle. And between levels there's really weird looking lady who tells the story. It's a very weird mashup.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

I'm tempted to put this higher but I'm just as equally tempted to put it lower because the graphics are just weird. The enemies and background look like they belong in a Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park game. They're very well drawn with good color and good visual language. The sprites themselves are also well drawn, although there aren't too many of them. However, your Sprite is not very cute, but it turns into a weird anime character that looks nothing like the Sprite normally does. When you're falling or have fallen into water or into spikes. You look like a cherub angel rather than the bodybuilder Tarzan that you normally do. It's comical but off-putting.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music ranges from passable to awful.

Overall Score: 47
