Kaite Tsukutte Asoberu Dezaemon

Mario Maker meets Star Solider

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Athena

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

The pre-built game looks and plays a LOT like Star Soldier. It's a clone, really. Three weapons - missiles, seeking orb snakes, and spread shot. Each can be upgraded 4 or 5 times. No upgrades are lost when you switch between weapons. Your bomb differs for each weapon. Great gameplay with some light bullet hell moments. The Mario Maker aspects baffled me to the point that I gave up after several minutes. It looks like Mario Paint but has weird controls and no instructions, even with the translation patch.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Again, this is a poor man's Star Soldier or Soldier Blade. The levels are all in space but have a good mix of enemies and environmental hazards. Not memorable but also well made.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

No personality whatsoever, although the gameplay sections feel like a proper space vertical shooter. Just with a little less pizzazz.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Not a hint of slowdown. Huge sprites and satisfying explains all around.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Terrible, tinny music. Sound is good but can't make up for the boring soundtrack.

Overall Score: 75

Review ID: 1708
