Kouryuu no Mimi

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: VAP

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

2D side scrolling brawler like Ninja Warriors. You can punch, kick with Y+d-pad, jump kick, and jump down kick. Nice grab and throw. Enemies drop weapons including a gun, bat, or brass knuckles. Lots of other moves like double tap down to roll or up to do a front flip. Satisfying combat. Enemies have some predictable movement and attacks with a good amount of variety. Good AI, they don't swarm you nor do they ignore you. They can avoid attacks by side stepping into the background. Kinda cool. Another cool feature is that the enemies have hit detection so even when falling down they will hit each other. A power meter fills and you can go into super Saiyan mode where you are nigh invincible and have a protective tornado attacking enemies for you.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Levels are broken up up by the story happening but feature small segments throughout. A step behind the craziness in Ninja Warriors but still quite nice. Keeps you hooked more than most brawlers.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Highly cinematic presentation. Long cutscenes between levels and even dialogue during levels. Compelling stuff. Story reminds me of Batman where you're a fabulously wealthy guy who left his family to become a martial arts master and are returning to the corrupt city after your father dies and leaves you everything.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Really nice artwork and animations. There are only a few enemy models. Large, lanky sprites aren't the most appealing thing. The art style goes for realism. No slowdowns, even with four or five enemies on screen.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Upbeat tunes with a lot of synth and good variety. Wouldn't be out of place in a shooter or a Capcom title.

Overall Score: 70
