Lennus II: Fuuin no Shito

aka Paladin's Quest 2

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: Asmik Ace Entertainment

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Weird. All attacks are magic based and your main character seemingly can't use any. Only your three party members who you recruit in the first area have any offensive capability. I don't understand why the main character even exists. Combat and all menus are achieve by using the d-pad. This is novel and unintuitive but works decently well. It's not always perfectly clear which direction corresponds to which option so it requires more brain cells than the usual button press system that every other game uses. However, I love that the menu memory allows you to then hold down on A to auto-battle. Love that. Terrible inventory management. You can't tell what each item does and they don't stack in the menu so prepare to scroll through a ton of text. Yuck. Same with magic, to be honest. The spells have unintelligible names so I have no idea what they do. Again, weird.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Terrible pacing. You have to do SOOO much grinding before you can survive the first dungeon. It's insane. The long tutorial can mostly be skipped, so thanks for that.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Typical chosen one nonsense without any setup. I couldn't care less about this weird sci-fi setting with long eared furries. Where am I and why do I care about any of this? Is there an antagonist?

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Pastel colors. Simple artwork with straight lines and no shading. Looks like Paladin's Quest. (Looks it up) Ok this is the sequel to PQ so that makes sense. The effects for magic are great but the style is off-putting. At least to me. It looks different than anomy thing else in this era, but it's not a good look in my opinion.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The sound effects are so, so bad. Scrolling through text plays a scratchy radio static sound similar to Metal Gear or Bionic Commando, but significantly worse. It's so obnoxious. Every menu press and door and has a loud, grating sound like this. Music is ok but nothing special.

Overall Score: 52
