Lupin III: Densetsu no Hihō o Oe!

Grab those ladders

Genre: adventure - platform

Publisher: Epoch Co.

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

At first I thought this might be an action platformer, but there's precious little combat, and what is here isn't great. Instead the name of the game is to navigate a maze, find and totem off a computer, and sneak back out. The gameplay is a bit like Prince of Persia. You can walk, run, jump, and use a variety of special items, including high jump shoes, a Bionic Commando like grappling hook, and a few offensive weapons like a gun and dynamite. Cycling through the items is done via L and R. Oh and you can punch, crouch kick, and jump kick. Finally you can wall grab and crawl through vents. The controls are adequate but laggy. Again, the movement is deliberate like Prince of Persia. Not bad but also not very exciting.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Ugh. I wish the levels were better, or included a map of some sort. Some do, but not all, and they all would greatly benefit from a map. Even with a map there is no indicator of where to go. You just wander, picking up mostly useless items, find the computer to turn off, kill an easy boss and then find the exit. There's not much variety. Oh and most levels are built around long ladder climbing sections. It's hard to grab the ladder and fall damage kills you so there are a lot of cheap deaths.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Obviously a manga. It's got a neo noir vibe with spindly, 70s anime characters looking like 40s noir gangsters. The long cutscenes are as entertaining as the gameplay.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The artwork and animation are great. Lovely backgrounds. I debated between 3 and 4 because everything looks great, but there isn't much. Only a handful of sprites exist in the whole game.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The first song is annoying. But future stages have much improved music. None of it is amazing, but overall it fits the old anime vibe and didn't bother me.

Overall Score: 58
