Multi Play Volleyball

For the volleyball sim crowd

Genre: sports - volleyball

Publisher: Pack-In-Video

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Leans heavily into the "sim" mentality. Basically, don't play it if you aren't a big volleyball fan. The controls take some getting used to, especially the way the ball floats and with the careful timing of your jumps. Moving your players into position to attempt a block is impressively realized, but also difficult to execute in the moment, given how fast the ball moves on a spike. Also, setting the ball to the left or right is the only option as your middle striker never hits the ball, so setting it to the center always results in a miss. Every point has one of three outcomes - you miss the ball (unforced error), you hit it out of bounds, or the opponent hits it out of bounds. The other team will return EVERYTHING hit within their court and will block 100% of your spikes. So their random errors are the only way to score a point.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Tournament and Battle modes, but no other configuration options.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

The music and graphics suggest an arcade-like experience, but what you get couldn't be more different. This is a stuff sim, through and through.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

There are lot of sprites on screen and a strong visual language to show who is selected, where the ball is and where it's headed. That said, the sprites are carbon copies of one another, no matter which country you choose, so it's not a very interesting game to look at.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music and sounds are straight out of a rocking arcade sports title. They woulnd't feel out of place in NBA Jam. They don't align with the gameplay, however.

Overall Score: 41
