Monstania for SFC

Monstania

Final Fantasy Tactics-lite

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Pack-In-Video

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

This is unique! It's almost a turn-based tactics game, but enemies move when you do, so it's more like a real-time tactics game. You can attack or use an ability. In most RPGs you have to be conservative about using your abilities or magic, but this game is the opposite. You regain AP (ability points?) with every turn, so you can use those abilities liberally. The game is easy as pie. I love it! I enjoy a game like this which doesn't ramp the difficulty up to eleven. this one eases in at about a 3. There are even RPG levels, but they're pointless because you just gain a new level after each battle. It's so simple.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The levels couldn't be more linear. The inclusion of a nicely detailed map is almost overkill, given how simple things are. There's no overmap or anything else, really. You just go to the next area, fight the battle, and that's that.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Pretty generic story in the early stages of the game, with you playing an adventurous boy from the village who begrudgingly allowing your girlfriend to follow you on a quest. According to the walkthrough there are 8 to 10 other playable characters who come and go from your two-person party, so it sounds like a lot of fun character interactions are in store. Good stuff

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Looks an awful lot like Final Fantasy Tactics. So much so that I wonder if there's a shared pedigree. I absolutely love the character designs and the pixel art in this game.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Love the soundtrack. It's not going to rival Chrono Trigger, mind you, but it's great.

Overall Score: 82
