Miracle Girls for SFC

Miracle Girls

I hope you like pastels

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Takara

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Slow movement, but the controls are responsive enough. It's obviously geared toward a beginner audience. Even so, there's some challenging platforming, even in the early levels. This is due to endless pits and small platforms, as well as the mechanic of creating platforms by stunning enemies. Employs a pacifist mechanic where enemies can be stunned but cannot be killed, similar to Quackshot. In this game you throw a piece of bubble gum or candy which must hit the enemy. The arc and short distance of your throw adds a little extra challenge. It reminds me of throwing candy in Little Nemo, or jellybeans in A Boy and his Blob. A couple of complaints are that you can't scroll the screen to the left, similar to first-gen platformers like Super Mario Bros. Also, there are a number of auto-scrolling segments where two different colored platforms appear and you must choose one of the two. Picking the wrong one results in instant death. Your friend appears in a buble and calls out the correct color, although it's in Japanese so it's hard to get it right. Kinda weird.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Uninspired, extremely short platforming levels. There are no bosses, but instead feature simple mini games akin to the between-level games in Super Mario Bros 2 or Yoshi's Island. These mini games are also hidden in hard-to-reach mid-level doors and are also playable right from the main menu.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

It's not my cup of tea, but the anime stylings of this game are consistent and obviously appeal to their intended audience. It's got a Kirby vibe to it and wears its pink and pastel look on its sleeve.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Again, the color choices make me a little sick, but honestly there's a lot of quality here. The sprites look great and animate well and the backgrounds feature an impressive amoutn of layered parallax scrolling.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Annoying, chirpy music with a way-too-fast rhythm. Gets on your nerves quickly.

Overall Score: 61
