Otoboke Ninja Colosseum

Lifeless Bomberman

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Intec

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Blatant Bomberman clone, with only a couple of new ideas, but several WTH mechanics. My chief complaint are the squirrely, inprecise controls. It's difficult to make a turn at an intersection, which often leads to being unable to get out fo the way of an enemy or a "bomb". Oh and the other big complaint is that the draw distance is only about 10%! Horrible camera work guys. Bombs are replaced by ninja throwing stars being shot in all four directions. At first I didn't understand the value of this new feature, but I like it because it allows you to send multiple shots i the same direction all at once. This is helpful for clearing out a bunch of obstacles that are lined up, but is also necessary because the game sends enemies which take numerous hits. Some take 4 or more. Yay on that first one, but boo to the second. Another gripe is that you can't chain "bombs" together as you can in Bomberman. I love that feature. Enemy movement is pretty sporadic and chaotic which makes it hard to hit them. I have many of the same complaints with the Bomberman adventure modes, but it's pronounced her because it's the only mode you can play solo.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Despite being a Bomberman clone, this game is inexplicably missing a core feature - computer players! Yeah, in the VS (aka Battle) mode you can only play against other human players (up to 4 total players). So you can't play a Battle game when playing solo. So lame! The adventure mode is by far the weakest part of games like this, but it's the only mode I can play.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You play as a nondescript set of anime girls, only they look a little more realistic than typical anime. The rest of the chracters in the story mode look more traditional anime, so it's an odd mashup.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Decent pixel art. Nothing spectacular though. Weird character designs without any discernable theme. The HUD and other text has a messy, graffiti sort of look. It's not bad, but again doesn't quite fit the rest of the visuals and theme. It looks like something from one of those "extreme" sports titles from the 90s.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Ok music. Each area has its own music, which is catchy by not memborable.

Overall Score: 45
