Ossu!! Karatebu

Culture Brain's frame rate strikes again

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Culture Brain

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Horrible frame rate and slow down. Makes this game difficult to play. Movement is quick. I couldn't figure out how to do any special moves. Seems like a lot of these Japanese. Only fighting games are like that. The fights are strange because after you knock your opponent down they have five seconds to get back up where your player just stands there as if you're supposed to do a finishing move, but nothing I did would end the round. Instead the opponent gets back up. This repeats several more times. I found that I had to knock down an enemy 4 to 6 times for them to truly go down. This makes rounds last way too long.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There's the story mode and versus an a tournament.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Not sure exactly what the theme is. It's a bunch of hulking guys fighting each other. No female characters. All the characters more or less look the same to me so it's a boring cast of characters.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The sprites themselves look great. Very well drawn. They have a chunky feel to them sort of like a SNK fighter. However, the slow down and abysmal frame rate drag the graphics down. Also, it takes a realistic style which again just comes off as boring

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is very upbeat which almost feels out of place in this gritty looking game. But the sound isn't a problem here. Yes ma'am. Rick is doing down there

Overall Score: 44
