Panic in Nakayoshi World

Gauntlet as an escort mission

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like Coron Land. It's a twin-stick shooter with only one stick. Eight directional movement. However, the gameplay is just plain boring. The objective is to kill all enemies, which spawn in from Gauntlet-style spawn generators. The board is covered by a TON of blocks. Your default weapon strength is so weak that these blocks take 3 or 4 hits to break! This makes clearing the board an absolute slog. Oh, and while wandering around the board you have to pick up and escort a useless NPC who starts crying if you don't get her. And both you and she will die in one hit. Thankfully, it's not as terrible as I'm making it out to be. Your shot travels almost the length of the screen and the controls are nice and responsive. However, the game is not much fun.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

All stages are a single screen. They all feel similar and just feel sparse and boring.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Not a fan of Sailor Moon, and the princess escort aspect really annoys me.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

So much pastel!

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Let's see, sugary, awful music, the most ear-piercing sound effect each time you fire a shot, and a crying sound from your useless escort NPC that makes Baby Yoshi sound like Mozart's Requiem by comparison.

Overall Score: 40
