Picross NP Vol. 1 for SFC

Picross NP Vol. 1

Picross as it should be

Genre: puzzle - overhead

Publisher: Jupiter

Year: 1999

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Perfect Picross controls, including all the QoL features you'd expect. Just look up a translation guide to get the settings the way you want them. My only complaint is that the hints don't automatically turn red to indicate that you've found that set. You can manually set this but it's laborious.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Tons of puzzles, with a board going up to 25x20. And the transition between levels is perfect - finish one and it drops you right into the next one. As it should be. This makes it a great pick up and play experience.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The Mario and Mario theme is gone, replaced by generic presentation. There is a set of puzzles with Pokemon characters, which does nothing for me, personally.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Nothing to see here, but it's also not cluttered like O-Chan was. The clean graphics and colorized solved puzzles have become a staple for the series for the past 25 years, so you won't hear complaints from me.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The only knock on this game is the obnoxious music. I muted it. All four selectable tracks are terrible.

Overall Score: 80
