Poko-Nyan! Henpokorin Adventure

Pre-school Sonic

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Toho

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Sonic clone. Movement is momentum-based, with fast movement at times, but very slow movement while you're at a stand still. However, it has a double-jump! This greatly improves the overall movement tech and makes things a lot of fun. This is a collectathon, with a ton of fruit spread throughout the multiple layers of platforms. These collectibles only seem to give you points so there's no real reason to pick them all up. Each level ends with a boss. Your only means of attack is to bounce on an enemy's head. This can be difficult given the height of your jumps so it's generally best to avoid combat as much as possible. Also, the camera gives you 90% of the screen, which means that it snaps wildlly when you change direction. You seem to have unlimited health and there is no way to die. Getting hit causes a long "I'm hurt" animation, but evenatually you get up and go on your way. There's a timer but nothing happens when it gets to zero. Truly a game for the kids.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

The screens are large, with platforms on the ground, on the roofs of buildings, and in the clouds. There are also fun, random elements that serve no gameplay purpose, such as a rideable ferris wheel and spinning tea cups. The levels play to the strength of the game's design.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Super cute. You're a tanooki who can turn into a kangaroo. Enemies are anmials and toys come to life.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

A bit of a mixed bag. the sprites are wonderful, clean, and very well-anmiated. Maybe too animated, as it creates a little lag in the controls, but the target audience will love it. The backlgrounds range from good to boring, which is the primary downer on the graphics front. But that's a small complaint.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The music and sound effects seem lifted from a Bomberman game, albeit with a much slower pace. They're light, high-pitched, and fun.

Overall Score: 84
