SD F-1 Grand Prix for SFC
Review #2298
SD F-1 Grand Prix
Mario Kart the sim
Gameplay
Great, responsive controls. Your car feels weighty, not floaty like so many of these games. I don't usually like racing games but this one works. It's a cross between Mario Kart and a serious sim, albeit with a much slower pace and more forgiving gameplay. Crashing locks you back more than in most of these kart games, so it's a bit more challenging that the average MK clone. Also, no power-ups. You can use a nitro boost by collecting a bunch of ammo/coins but you'll be lucky to use this even twice per race.
There are six (!) camera views to choose from but only one worth using. Two other these are completely useless and it's a wonder that they even allow you to toggle through them while driving.
Level Design
The levels are good, but boring. They're just a race track with no frills. The game stagnates quickly as a result. Everything looks and plays the same.
Theme
You've got a cast of anthropomorphic animals to choose from. None exhibits any personality or theme. This feels out of line with the straight laced tracks and the human commentators on the bottom of the screen who talk as the race begins and ends. It's a weird mashup.
Art Style
One of the better looking mode 7 racers, with a smooth framerate and colorful sprites.
Audio
The music is way better than it ought to be, although it's heavy on the reverb. The commentators are annoying but thankfully don't have much to say.
