SD Hiryuu no Ken

Culture Brains attempt at Pocket Fighter

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Culture Brain

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Laggy controls. Eats inputs like crazy. Jilted movement with horrendous framerate and poor hit detection. It's a shame because the core controls should work well. There are 15(!) fighters and the special moves are easy enough. It even has really cool block mechanic when you jump into the background and can appear behind the opponent. It's actually a really innovative feature but is wasted by the other drawbacks of this game's subpar mechanics.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Tons of modes: Story, VS, Tournament, and the always welcome Practice. Even has 8 difficulty levels.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

15 characters with a ton of variety. They're cartoony (hence the SD moniker) and remind me of Pocket Fighter.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The graphics are cute and fun, but the animation is horrendous. Typical Culture Brain.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Music is ok, but is too quiet. The composition is nice anyway.

Overall Score: 54
