SD Kidou Senshi Gundam 2

Easy peasy

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Angel

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

This is a shoot-em-up, albeit with a few stages where you're grounded. Responsive controls, with a doublejump and some powerups including two types of guns and a shield or transformation into a ship (a smaller hitbox). Nothing too crazy or interesting, but there's nothing wrong with the foundation they've set here.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Stupid design. This has to be the laziest, most boring level design I've ever seen in a shooter. In all stages the screen autoscrolls, so even though you're grounded half of the time I'm calling this a shooter rather than an action-platformer. The true shooter levels are the only ones which provide any challenge because enemies can spawn in from a few different points. Granted, it's only three different points - right-bottom, right-top, and top-right. These fixed points are boring enough, but enemies only spawn one or two at a time, and always one per point. They move along a set direction and only fire one or two slow bullets, making it just as easy to avoid them as it is to kill them. The grounded levels are even dumber. Enemies always spawn in on the ground and one at a time. So, all you have to do is stay on the right half of the screen and you'll mow them down as they spawn. Rarely does the game add any platforms and when they do you can simply jump over an enemy that is hiding behind the platform. It's so, so stupid!

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Gundam is cool. SD Gundam is even better. Colorful and creative cutscenes add to the fun.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The sprites are excellent, but everything else is subpar. The backgrounds are as boring as can be. I like the cutscenes, but I can't praise this game any further than this.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great music, which I assume came from the anime.

Overall Score: 63
