Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio-tachi no Banka
River City Prison BreakGenre: action - beat em up
Publisher: TechnÅs Japan
Year: 1994
System: SFC
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Punch, kick, jump kick, and elbow behind you. Then again, all you need is the jump kick because of the braindead AI. Just run away (you can dash) jump kick to knock the bad guy down, then rinse and repeat. Once there's only one bad guy you can sprinkle on a couple of ground stomps while the enemy is down. Gets boring almost immediately. Decently controls but terribly repetitive. Switch between two playable characters but they are functionally identical. Enemies are damage sponges.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
I want to like it because of the cinematic presentation, but it's pure cosmetics. The "levels" are all the same with no environmental elements, weapons, or set pieces. Just a handful of guys in a room. Boring
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Extremely cinematic. Long cutscenes full of dialogue. Whoever did the translation thinks they were making a Scorsese flick and filled it with as much foul.language as possible. I'm intrigued by the prison break storyline but the gameplay will keep me from getting to far.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Small sprites with good animation. Backgrounds look great with wonderful lighting and shading. They have no scrolling or animation but look good in stills. Theres not enough variety to recommend.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Catchy music. Nice sounds that match the action on screen.
Overall Score: 47
