Sugoi Hebereke

One long Mario Party minigame

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Unique gameplay. It's a two-to-four player arena brawler with an overhead view. Think top-down Smash Bros, but with only a couple of attacks and horribly slow movement. It actually reminds me of the many mini-games from Mario Party games where all you can do is punch your opponents. It's amusing for a minute, but gets stale almost immediately. A few powerups pop in now and then but they're hard to collect and don't do much. All you have to do is hit each enemy 5 times with a close range punch or kick, and the best strategy is to avoid everyone to let them knock each other out. Again, it gets boring fast. Oh and did I mention the crippling slowdown when there are three or four players? It's basically unplayable with four players.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The arenas are cosmetically diverse, but functionally identical. Many appear to have edges that you can fall off but that's not the case. In a couple of cases there are environmental elements but they have little impact on the game.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Cute mascot-ish critters.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Cute and colorful sprites, despite being tiny. It evokes a similar look and feel of Bomberman, but with far less happening on screen at any given time.
