The Adventures of Lolo in Arkanoid Land

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Yutaka

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It's Arkanoid. With a few more angles than you'd expect. Many of the blocks you're destroying are octogonal gems which send the ball flying at unexpected angles. This makes the game more challenging than Arkanoid and most of its clones. There are only a couple of gimmicks like a health bar which basically acts as a time limit. Some blocks drop items which either give or take health, but I never got close to running out of time. Instead losing the ball is the only real concern. If you like Pong/Arkanoid you'll like this game but I find it rather simplistic.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The difficulty is right from the get go. Levels are devilishly designed with a lot of angular blocks positioned far down on the screen. The objective is to kill the yellow bad guy tiles and everything else is just in the way. I like not having to clear every single tile, as is the norm in this sort of game. So kudos for that. There are boss battles after 5 or 6 screens but these are boring slogs with no indication of how many hits are remaining.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Your character is a blue squishy blob which looks like Lolo or a slime from Dragon's Quest. This gives the game a measure of charm and character. It feels very arcadey, which I like in this sort of game.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Good pixel art. The scrolling background is a nice touch. The border and HUD never changes but there's enough variety in the visuals that I consider them to be above average.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

A cute but repetitive song plays that sounds like it's composed of voice samples. It's fine

Overall Score: 63
