Super Back to the Future II

Do time machines cause slowdown?

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Toshiba EMI

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

It plays like Buster Busts Loose. You're only attack is to do a backflip somersault and hit the enemy while you're spinning. I guess that's the same thing as Sonic, huh? Anyway, it's momentum based like Sonic which is super annoying when you're at a standstill. And unfortunately that's the entire game. No new mechanic is ever added. Aside from using as an attack, the only other thing you can do is climb walls that have corrugation on them. But they're very very few of these walls. I can only think of four in the first eight levels. So the gameplay itself is monotonous because it never changes but the game's real sin is the profoundly pervasive slowdown. It's legitimately crippling. This is probably the worst slowdown I've seen in a SNES game.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

I want to be harsh on the levels in this game because in one respect they don't play to the strengths of your hoverboard movement. There's a lot of small platforms to jump to and upward slopes that you have to jump to navigate. It's all extremely awkward. However, the levels themselves are so different from one another that they're interesting to play through. Plus they follow the story of Back to the Future 2 to a T.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

The plot and settings of each level follow the storyline of the movie perfectly. I really enjoyed revisiting the areas from the movie.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The sprite work and backgrounds are all excellent. The only real problem here is the awful slow down, but that's mainly a problem for the gameplay and not so much for the graphics. This is a great looking game

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

The music throughout the game is good. The movies theme song is used in the first level which is a good choice and the remaining music while not lifted from the movie, is still pretty decent.

Overall Score: 66
