Super Chinese Fighter
The Infinity Gauntlet meets Dragon BallGenre: fighting - 1v1
Publisher: Culture Brain
Year: 1995
System: SFC
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Dumbed down version of Street Fighter where you only have two buttons to attack. You can do a fireball, as per usual, but you also can collect items like a bomb or a pit, so it has a little bit of Smash Bros in it. Movement feels fine and hit detection is okay so it's actually not half bad. It's only real sin is the horrendous frame rate.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Three modes: story, two-player versus, and tournament. The story mode is the highlight here . It tells a long story of the Chinese brothers trying to track down five scrolls which are blatant ripoffs of the infinity stones. They're even roughly named the same: fire, soul, time, light, etc. You can make several choices during the adventure although I didn't play it multiple times so I don't know what the consequences of making different choices are, but it was kind of fun and funny.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
This game leans hard into humor and mostly succeeds, so long as you're using the English translation. Of course. It's a very silly game. Silly story. Everything is told in very long cut scenes that are unskippable. So don't watch the title screen if you're planning to play the story mode.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
As usual, this Culture Brain game has decent artwork but horrendous frame rate and animations just on bearable. Actually they only really get bad on certain levels. For the most part it seems like they're 20 to 30 frames, but on some levels it's half that and nigh unplayable.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
The music and sound effects waffle between fun and obnoxious. The sound is just tinny and high-pitched. Even if the compositions are decent Chinese themed, they're ofttimes grating.
