The Great Battle IV
Discount Mega Man XGenre: action - gun
Publisher: Banpresto
Year: 1994
System: SFC
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
I thought about giving this a 5 because you've got four playable character you can swap between at any time. They each play slightly differently but they do tend to move around slower than I would like. It's like a slow Gunstar Heroes. Still, the controls are tight and the gunplay is great fun. Most enemies require multiple hits and get a second of iframes which really shows the pace. I wish there were some powerups or something else to expand the gameplay, but what's here is very good.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Like the gameplay, I wish the game had taken a few more risks to increase the variety. There are a few interesting set pieces but for the most part you need to walk slowly forward and kill enemies off screen before they can get a shot off. They never load in from behind or above you so it gets a bit monotonous. But even so, it's way better than average.

Some of the best sci-fi pixel graphics of the 16-bit era. A great mix of Contra, Mega Man, Cybernator, Sparkster, Gunstar Heroes, etc.
