Tsuyoshi Shikkari Shinasai: Taisen Puzzle-dama

Konami's Puyo clone

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Familiar Puyo gameplay with a few welcome gimmicks. For example, the garbage blocks are a cube with a trapped normal block inside. Making a match against one of these cubes frees the trapped blocks. Doing this might cretae a new set of matched blocks which will in turn create a free combo. This causes some truly insane combo chains and fast reversal of fortune. It almost makes the game become more about luck than skill. Rounds typically end very quickly because of this mechanic.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

All the usual modes: Story, VS, 2P, 1P, but no puzzle. It's mostly a competitive game, however, and the number of different VS modes reflects this.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Some sort of weird workplace drama with anime Japanese business men and women.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

So, the graphics are undeniably high quality, but it's like a well-drawn painting of carpet - high quality, but boring to look at. Also, the use of color is blase. Everything is yellow, brown, or black. It's like a typical 1970's home decor.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Classic Konami sounds plus some decent music to go with it.

Overall Score: 66

Review ID: 1936
