Uchū no Kishi: Tekkaman Blade

Bad fighter, terrible shooter

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: BEC

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

It's a hybrid game with levels that begin with a horizontal shooter and end with a 1v1 fighting match. The shooter is easily one of the worst I've ever experienced. It plays a bit like the shooter sections of Cybernator but without a gun. Yeah, you heard that right. Instead you have a staff that you throw and a sword for very close quarters attacks. It works about as well as it sounds, which is not well at all. Horrible in every way. The fighter sections are only mildly better, but are absolutely juvenile in their own right. You've only got two buttons and no special moves. Oh and your health carries over from the shooter section so your at a significant disadvantage. Again, terrible.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Horrible level design. Completely lazy and forgettable.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Aliens have come to conquer Earth and a lone mech pilot is here to save the day. Wow, haven't seen that before. The cutscenes are mostly text but tell a little bit of story. The bosses have choice words for you before attacking, so that's something.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

The shooter sections are dreadful, with drab color, tiny, lame sprites, and horrible framerate. A solid zero. The fighting segments look quite a bit better with large sprites. The background are non existent and animation is again poor, so we'll go with a one here.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Uninteresting music. Not horrible but forgettable. Sound effects are all the same crunch that sounds like a potato chip being smashed.

Overall Score: 21
