Adventures of Willy Beamish, The
Nice Horny toad you've got thereGenre: adventure - point n click
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 0
Gameplay Notes:
Terrible control scheme. The cursor can be in two different states - I'll call them view or interact. View allows you to ask the narrator for an explanation for whatever you click on while interact in theory let's you do something. There's no indication of what can be interacted with besides places you can move to, so finding something to do requires hunting and pecking. The cursor moves slowly, which is fine, and the game delivers near constant loading, which is not fine. The loading is downright crippling and saps any fun or engagement you might be feeling. Interacting with your inventory is also a sore spot, as I could never quite figure it out. Ugh. I know these Sierra games have their fans, but even if this is a worthwhile experience on PC, I do NOT recommend playing it on Sega CD.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
The game amounts to a series of interactions with three possible responses. Now I see where BioWare and Bethesda got their game design style. Most doors lead to a quick end of game so this trial and error to find the "right" path isn't a compelling experience in my book.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
The protagonist, Willy Beamish, is basically Bart Simpson with a pet frog. I've never cared for the smart alec kid archetype, so beside his penchant for video games, I don't much care for his adolescent concerns.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
The artwork has a cartoon look and feel, with standard 90s gross out sensibilities. The animation is quite poor and made all the worse due to the frequent 10-30 second loading times mid action.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
The music isn't terribly impressive and while the videos are well done they are much quieter than the music.
Overall Score: 22
