Aoi Blink
Triple time those keysGenre: action - gun
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
The most Meh game I can think of. Controls are not very responsive but are serviceable due to your gun having decent range. If this were a close up punch n kick game the score would be lower. You have two companions who operate as options. They honor gravity so aren't as useful as the shadows in Ninja Gaiden 2 but they're helpful when using a jump attack. The momentum based movement causes a lot of annoying jumps.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
The actual levels themselves are fine, but the gated overworld is straight up stupid. You must find a red key somewhere in a random stage on the overworld. There's no indicator where it is or which stage it's in. And the only way to find it is to shoot every last time on the screen, which means you'll be hopping around an firing your shurikens everywhere. I don't mind hidden secrets but it shouldn't be required to make simple progress in your game. Stupid design choice.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
You're three fedora wearing dudes, sometimes with a Princess Peach lookalike in your party. Between stages NPCs give you random unhelpful messages. It's incoherent but has a cute vibe.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Has an almost SMB3 look. Not as good, but colorful and lively.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I barely noticed the soundtrack. I know it was there but was so thoroughly in the background that I couldn't tell you anything about it.
