Asterix and the Power of the Gods
Roman for a shieldGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1995
System: MD PAL
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
All the usual Western stuff. Bad hitboxes, terrible attack reach, enemies swarm and have no collision, slow movement with a spastic and momentum based run button. You bonk while running, even against the edge of the screen where no wall is. It's not completely unplayable, but it's close. The best thing I can say is that the jump is tall. Everything else is bad.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Wasted potential. There's an overworld with connected stages that are all seemingly optional. You're tasked with recovering a shield and need to investigate each area to find it. The stages have some fun variety, with branching paths and dead ends galore, but it's entertaining to explore. I played the first handful of areas but never found the shield, so I don't know how to progress. Tons of jumps that are just out of reach for walking but with barely enough room to make a running leap. Frustrating platforming, but that's the gameplay's fault.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
I've always wanted to like Asterix. It has a silly, Hanna Barbera vibe.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Teeny tiny sprites with minimal animation. Looks almost 8-bit, save for the detail in the backgrounds. Poor visual language for platforms and interactive elements.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Fun music is the highlight here. Sounds get old quickly.
