Ball Jacks for MD

Ball Jacks

Everything turns into a crab

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1993

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

This is a competitive ball-grabbing game involving crabs. No, not that kind of balls...or crabs. The objective is to grab four orbs that are continuously moving along a conveyor belt from top to bottom on either side of the screen. You can move your crab vertically along a track and fire your left and right crab hands to grab the balls on the other side. Your opponent attempt to do the same. Get all four balls on your side for 10 seconds and you win. Or have 3 or 4 at the end of the round (3 mins) and you win. If that sounds simple, it is. And frankly, it's fun for a couple of rounds and then you're ready for something else. There are a couple of other mechanics, like damaging the other crab by hitting them with the ball you've grabbed, and knocking the ball out of the other guy's pincers, but that's the extend of this game's gameplay.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

There's only one game, one mode, and no options.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Namco does a decent job of setting the stage, with good menus and sounds. But the game is so one-note that there isn't a lot of character.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

No complaints, but nothing to write home about either. The game runs well. It's a one-screen arcade game, so that's not a major achievement.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Again, pretty good for what it is.

Overall Score: 50
