Battlecorps

If Joe Cool drove a mech

Genre: simulation - tank/mech

Publisher: Core Design

Year: 1994

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Click up or down to pick a speed and then use left or right to change direction. No strafing so just walk toward your target and absorb whatever they're firing at you. Four or five weapons to choose from. All but the machine gun have limited ammo and no pickups to get more. Shields also seems to deplete and somehow you can regenerate them but I couldn't figure out how. That's the extend of the gameplay. I got bored after 20 mins of the same gameplay loop.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Never ending levels. No map. Confusing layout with no clear directions. Super easy to get turned around. Boring as could be.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Typical post apocalyptic sci-fi theme. It's Mad Max meets MechWarrior, but without any lore or personality.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Fantastic artwork and performance for the time. Looks better than most first person PS1 games. The lack of variety hurts and the enemy sprites are hard to pick out against the similarly colored backgrounds, but there's no denying this is a good looking 16-bit shooter.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

Ridiculously awful sound design. Music straight out of the 1970s Peanuts cartoon movies. You know, the ones with the bwa bwa sound effects and disco vibe. My kids came over and asked me why I was listening to suck bad music. Sound effects are ok but this game beats any Zelda and Yoshi's Island for the worst "low health" sounds ever. It sounds like a toy-sized semi truck honking its horn ever half second. Finally, the story and level objectives are given via a voice track that is less intelligible than the intercom at a busy airport terminal.

Overall Score: 35
