Break In

Point me in the right direction coach

Genre: sports - pool

Publisher: Naxat Soft

Year: 1989

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

I cannot make a single shot. The only way I can knock something in is to be perfectly aligned or to randomly pocket a ricochet. Even if I line up a shot perfectly the ball doesn't go where I want it to go. You aim by placing a shadow ball as your target spot. I really like this mechanic, but again it doesn't work well. It seems to be tied to where you hit it on the power meter. The meter shows your stick moving toward and away from ball and sometimes shows a sweet spot indicator. If you stop it right on that spot, which is nearly full strength, the ball goes where you told it to, but everywhere else is a crapshoot. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I could not figure this out. Who knows? The other notable gimmick is that you can play with a coach. Before each shot you can ask the coach for advise. This can take forever - sometimes 30 seconds or more for the AI to pick a shot for you. But be warned that their aim isn't always perfect so you can't just let them place the ball and shoot.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The most impressive collection of modes in a billiards game. There are games here I've never heard of. three modes inclue Simulation, Action, and Technique and six games including 9Ball, 8Ball, Rotation, cutgame, Yotsudama, and Bowland. Within each of these games is a regular or challenge mode, which is like a little story mode.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

There's a roster of 10 male and female competitors to choose from as your avatar or as a coach. I like the 1940's aesthetic. All text is in English. Nice presentation.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Only a top down view. Just before shooting you get a behind the ball view but cannot make adjustments there. Instead you have to back out to the top view to move the target.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Extremely simple music.
