Cho Jiku Yosai Macross 2036
A full Macross episode, in JapaneseGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Masaya
Year: 1992
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Great movement. Weapons are very interesting - 1 is your main shot and has full auto-fire. It's an underpowered peashooter which takes several levels to become upgraded into a slight spread. More importantly, once upgrade it also fires bombs and then missiles. The most novel feature is what the 2 button does. It fires a more powerful laser cannon which can be upgraded/customized in a between-stage shop, ala UN Squadron. This cannon can be shot indefinitely, but it overheats after only a couple of seconds and weakens. It's a great dynamic that kept things interesting. My only complaint is the peashooter main shot.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Standard stuff. Nothing terribly noteworthy besides the sometimes gorgeous backgrounds and notable environs. I wish there had been more variety in the stages beyond an Earth based level and the glut of space-based areas.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Incredible presentation. Cinematic cutscenes and in-game, comic book style exposition are unlike anything else in this generation, but their impact is lost on me. If only I could understand Japanese!
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Incredible backgrounds of space and earthscapes. Sprites are more of a mixed bag, with your ship looking fairly pedestrian compared to the bosses and the larger enemies. Your mech is even worse, inexplicably. It animates well as it is rotated but looks so flat and boring!
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Too loud sound effects. I stopped shooting at every opportunity. Music is too quiet and also uninteresting.
Overall Score: 71
