Circus Lido
Lizard BobbleGenre: arcade - n/a
Publisher: Uni Post Company Ltd
Year: 1991
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 0
Gameplay Notes:
Bubble Bubble without a jump button. Instead you use your tongue to grab ropes above you to climb up a level. You can shimmy across these ropes to move away from the hole created by these ropes. This mechanic makes movement terrible. Like Bionic Commando if you can't swing. The objective is to lap up all enemies on screen and shoot them (as a bubble) into a Venus fly trap to be eaten. It took me a while to figure out this unintuitive mechanic. The challenge is figuring out how to platform over to the enemies, using the terrible movement tech mentioned earlier. Other mechanics are added, including arrow that move platforms which are annoying to activate and rarely do what you want them to do. This game is trash.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
I was able to figure out the first 3 or 4 stages but then came to one (see screenshot) which I could not complete. The arrows simply don't work.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
Weird. You're a lizard, eating bugs that are many times larger than you, and shooting them as bubbles at Venus fly traps. Huh?
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
The sprites are drawn realistically, which seems out of place in a simple one screen action puzzle like this. Otherwise very 8 bit
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Terrible music. The song sounds like it was rejected from the Ninja Gaiden soundtrack for being too silly and obnoxious.
Overall Score: 12
