Cobra Command
Sewer Shark meets Dragon's LairGenre: fmv - n/a
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1992
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 0
Gameplay Notes:
Plays like Sewer Shark or Cadillacs & Dinosaurs - just move your reticle and fire on enemies when they become active. Every few seconds you also have to hold in a specified direction, similar to the old Dragon's Lair laserdisc arcade game. This combination of aiming and holding the d-pad are inconguent as your reticle is pulled to one extreme side of the screen. Not that it matters much, since the movement of the reticle is so imprecise. You can fire missiles or fire your vulcan gun, but both have the same result. At the end of the day, this is barely interactive. Just watch a YouTube playthrough, if you really want to see this game.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
There's no gameplay, but the levels are fun to watch. Again, a YouTube video would be more fun to watch, but there was at least some care given to levels you see on screen. Also, there are two modes: Normal and Advnaced. Normal gives you a HUD with visible arrows to tell you when to hold a direction. Why someone would play without this is beyond me. Only a psycho would take the time to memorize the entire game.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Flying an attack chopper in an urban warfare setting. Heck yeah! It reminds me of that scene with the two Agent Johnsons in Die Hard. "Just like ***** Saigon, hey Slick?" "I was in junior high, dickhead."
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
The low resolution of the artwork is a bummer, as the animation is decent. Also, the dark color palette makes it hard to tell what's going on at times. Nice explosions though.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Music is barely audible over the annoying radio friend telling you what to do constantly.
