Coryoon - Child of Dragon

Sprites sprites everywhere!

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Naxat Soft

Year: 1991

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Feels pretty good. You start out with a massive hitbox but can get a powerup that shrinks you down, like Air Zonk. In fact, this game stringly reminds me of that one. It's colorful and frantic and crazy as a loon. Auto-fire is always on. There are three weapons - orange spread, blue wave, and red fire. Each can be upgraded twice. One hit takes away your gun and another kills you. Powerups pop up constantly - even in boss battles - so you're rarely without a special weapon. The only complaint I've got is the sheer volume of sprites on screen at any given time. Every enemy drops a piece of fruit which archs upward and then descends offscreen. This clutters the screen something fierce. Combine this with the tiny, non descript bullets of enemies and it's insanely difficult to track those darn bullets. I found it was necessary to move slightly every so often, just in case a bullet had been fired that I hadn't noticed. Still, this is a surprisingly fun and challenging shooter.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Level design is disappointing. There are some ok enemy waves but by and large you're just moving along without anything interesting to do.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

I love the crazy setting. You're a baby dragon whose princess owner has been zapped and turned into a baby princess. Enemies are animals and bugs. It's a cute em up through and through.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

One of the most visually impressive PC Engine games. Heck, for the sheer number of sprites on screen without a hint of slowdown this is one of the most technically impressive games of the 16-bit generation. Parallax scrolling is all over the place, which gives an awesome sense of speed and excitement. This only makes the game more distracting. It's an ADD waking nightmare.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Eh, the music isn't all that great. It's fine, and I actually like the cheerful, talkative sound effects, but I'm not coming back for the music.

Overall Score: 76
