Doraemon - Yume Dorobou to 7 Nin no Gozans

Mute that Cat

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1993

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

The controls are tight but I have too many complaints about the gameplay to rate this higher. Good movement but the camera is stuck to your sprite so it moves around jarringly, like those videos where the person is holding the camera directly in front of their face. It's disorienting. One-hit death and cheap enemy placement result in many deaths. Plays like a Kirby game. You have a gun to immobilize enemies and can then pick up and throw them. They slide along the ground and will kill other enemies. Frequent pickups includes 1-ups, stars that are like Mario's coins, and a few powerups that grant you a shadow clone, a propeller to fly, a gear for invincibility, and another that I can't remember at the moment. These are fun but are horribly unreliable because they disappear without warning, again leading to cheap deaths.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

I love the levels, which feature a ton of originality and unique elements, like ball pits straight out of a 1980's McDonalds Play Area, blocks you can cling to, verticality, hidden areas, etc. There are way too many leaps of faith to go with the one-hit deaths, but overall I enjoyed the stage designs.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Blue Garfield isn't my favorite protagonist, and the lack of translation hurts the presentation. Also the many minigames are a slog. Stick to the platforming sections, please.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Creative and sickeningly pastel graphics. The backgrounds lack punch but the sprites look fantastic. Enemies repeat often, sapping the graphical punch even further. Good, but not excellent.

Audio Score: 0

Audio Notes:

Uggh. Some of the worst music I can remember. Unintentionally terrible, as there was clearly a lot of effect put into the overstuffed and obnoxious songs. Sound effects are equally abrasive. Mute
