Double Clutch
Genre: racing - overhead
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: MD PAL
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Blatant Micro Machines clone, with R.C. Pro-Am upgrades for good measure. Controls are squirrely but mostly managable. The inclusion of a minimap helps tremendously. Fun but shallow, without any weapons or other fun powerups. You can, however, bump opponents and push them off the road to destroy them. In fact, this is my preferred way of winning a race.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
There's only one mode where you begin on track one and work your way through all stages, Super Sprint style. The first batch of stages are simply mirrors of each other so I assume this is a common theme throughout the game. They're composed of mostly 90 or 180 degree turns with many criss-crossing intersections. Each track has three pickups, including some money, a nitro (which doesn't almost nothing), and something else that I could never figure out.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
The whole experience reminded me of the special racing stages from Blast Corps for the N64. It has a hillbilly quality in the music and setting. After each stage the winner and two runners up are shown on the podium with some of the worst artwork ever. The three drivers look like body builders and both they and the obligatory model appear to be stark naked. The whole thing feels disjointed and made by committee.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Horribly drab colors. Seriously, I think every they had a cap of 5 colors on screen at once.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Again, the hillbilly music was a choice.
