Don't Google the plotGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1991
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
A few big changeups from the first game. There's no more subweapon (good riddance) and you can cycle between five weapons (yay!). However, one of the weapons is literally useless and the health-for-powerups system is replaced by one-hit deaths. Still no difficulty settings.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Embarrassingly short levels.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
The Akira theme is both ramped and down at the same time. Long animated cutscenes emphasize cybernetic, biotechnic goings on reminiscent of Akira, but the art style and setting are far more generic than the first game. It's more techno-futuristic than cyberpunk this time. Also, no more Engrish!
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
The artwork takes a noticeable downgrade. The sense of speed is dialed down and enemy explosions are far more tame as well. The sprites are more flat with less shading and other details. Things just look a little off, especially the colors. Still good but not great.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
The music is not quite as good as the original and unfortunately is drowned out by the loud sounds. The sounds aren't as unpleasant as the original game's were, so it's a trade of music for sound. I prefer music.
