Akira the shoot em upGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Nice movement but without any speed adjustments. All enemies die in a single hit. You earn powerups for your weapon and taking a hit drops you down by one until a single hit kills you. Pick from one of two weapons and three sub weapons before starting the game. You can't change the selection. Subweapons have limited ammo per stage. Small sprites make it hard to hit your targets but also help you avoid damage. It's a tough but fair game. My only complaints are the single-weapon system (it could've used more) and the weird power up system with pickups that cycle between similar looking icons and will either upgrade your weapon or do seemingly nothing.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
The screen is filled with enemies. Nicely designed waves of enemies and some fun bosses. Each stage has a distinct and obvious theme.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
Serious Ghost in the Shell vibes. The opening cinematic is initially text heavy but then features some anime guys and sci-fi body horror. Good stuff. Presentation is excellent with great level transitions and menu music and whatnot. Tons of awesome Engrish, like a game over page that says "Mission Incomplete. Carry on. It will soon be easy."
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
2099 Neo-Tokyo setting that looks equal parts Akira, Blade Runner, and Ghost in the Shell. Fantastic parallax scrolling that gives a sense of speed while flying through the town. Enemies explode in beautiful tufts of fire and smoke. Enemy sprites are small but very well drawn. Lots of details throughout the fore and backgrounds.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
Awesome chip tune rock soundtrack that will have you bobbing your head. One of my favorite shooter soundtracks.
