Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Tons of video on menus and before games. By detault oyu also get a video after every big check and score during gameplay. This results in a 20-30 second break in the action that absolutely destroys the flow of the game. Thankfully, this can be turned off. Movement is slow but the arena is large. No performance improvement over the Genesis version. Unfortunately the AI is bad. Opponents mostly stay away from you, at least on the beginner difficulty. Your teammates stand around and don't do much. Opponents skate around forever. I felt like I never had possession. The only way to dispossess is to check but the opponent recovers and picks up the puck before you can. Bad hit detection. Pass and shoot are quick. No long animations here. Passing works well. Extra button for a flip on offense and a poke on defense. Seem unnecessary.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
All the usual modes. A side or a vertical camera view. There's no crowd in vertical mode. Difficult levels and you can disable penalties and offsides.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
NHL license and ESPN (back when they were good).
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Very nice sprites, but minimal animation. Player models are bigger and more realistic than other hockey games. No background to speak of.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Numerous videos and voice samples. The static crowd noise sounds like the din of a house party. Its distracting.
Overall Score: 58
