Ganbare! Golf Boys

Someday, we will be Ganbare Golf Men

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: Masaya

Year: 1989

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Uncomplicated controls muddled by an annoying UI. Each stroke requires direction, club selection, strike location, power, and finally the timing to actually hit it. That's 5 clicks, and changing anything requires you to back all the way to that spot and forward again. That would forgiveable if not for two things: First, the power meter always defaults to 50% power. Adjusting it down via the d-pad, and moving it to 100% takes a good 5 seconds every time. It's weird and annoying. Second, getting the timing just right is more challenging that it needs to be. I only hit the sweet spot half of the time, at best. Third, you aren't shown the distance to the pin. This is the bane of so many of these early golf games. You can reach this from the Pause menu but it takes several more clicks to do so.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Three courses. Three modes (Tournament, Stroke, Match). Quick and easy to jump into a game. Each hole is simple and well designed.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Reminds me of NES Tournament Golf on NES. a nice, breezy, uncomplicated environment.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Minimalistic, but perfectly pleasant. The view is an extreme birds-eye view which shows nearly then entire hole. This gives you all the information you need to aim your shot, but isn't visually impressive either. Just a single pixel ball moving across the hole. Still, what little is here looks very pleasant. The bold colors are quite appealing.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

A pleasant song plays continuously. I was whistling along with it after long. Each course has its own song, as well as the menus. It's got an NES quality. I love the chirpy sounds from the PC Engine.

Overall Score: 68
